Mr. Jerome Stocks, Chair, SANDAG Board of Directors
Dear Mr. Stocks:
I urge SANDAG and Caltrans to move the planned University City BRT bus station from Nobel/805 to La Jolla Village Drive/805.
La Jolla Village Drive is the heart of the high-density business area, and in walking distance to a large number of major employers as well as high-density housing.
Nobel/805 is the WRONG location for the BRT bus station. It is far from University City's high-density employment center, and in walking distance of almost nothing.
The whole purpose of the planned BRT bus service is to bring people from further south in San Diego to the high-density employment area of University City.
Yet locating the BRT station at the high-density La Jolla Village Drive/805 location was never studied.
Building the BRT bus station at Nobel Drive, which is on the remote edge of the community, would waste almost $100 million dollars in public funds.
That is the estimated cost of the BRT station and associated Direct Access Ramps and park and ride.
Construction of the BRT bus station at the Nobel/805 site would also be environmentally destructive to Rose Canyon and the Rose Creek watershed.
It would pave over a number of acres of protected habitat, and degrade the adjacent preserved land that contains high quality habitat for native plants and wildlife.
SANDAG held no community meetings on the massive I-805 North project, which includes widening the I-805 by 4 lanes and adding a BRT station, park and rides and direct access ramps. Caltrans did minuscule outreach and thus received input only from a few abutters who were mailed individual notices. Other than that, there was NO community input, NO input from the business community, and very few people in the community even know this project is planned. In contrast, for the I-805 South project south of I-8, SANDAG and Caltrans together held multiple community meetings in the affected communities, gathering input on the the proposed HOV lanes, BRT stations, Access Ramps, and Park and Rides.
Thank you for your help. Changing the BRT bus station to La Jolla Village Drive/805 will greatly benefit the future BRT service, businesses, the community, and the environment.
Sincerely,
